Still Wearing Your Starter Studs?

October 2026
The piece that got you here

There is a moment in every piercing story that nobody talks about. The appointment is done, the healing is behind you, and the jewellery you were pierced with is still sitting there. Months later. Doing its job, but not much more.

Your starter studs were chosen for one reason: to help a fresh piercing heal well. They were never meant to be the final word. If you have been wearing the same piece since the day you were pierced, consider this your nudge. Your ear has moved on. Your jewellery can too.

How to know you're ready

Healing happens on your body's timeline, not the calendar's. Lobes usually settle sooner, while cartilage placements like the helix, conch and tragus ask for more patience.

A healed piercing feels like nothing at all. Look for these signs:

  • No tenderness when you touch it, sleep on it or brush past it
  • No redness, swelling or crusting around the piercing
  • The jewellery moves freely without discomfort

If you're unsure, don't guess and don't swap it out at home. A quick check with one of our piercers will tell you exactly where you are.

Why the swap matters

Comfort first. Starter posts are cut long on purpose, leaving room for the swelling that comes with a fresh piercing. Once that settles, the extra length has nowhere to go. It catches on hair, scarves and pillows, and on cartilage that movement can lead to irritation and bumps. That's why we recommend downsizing to a shorter post once the initial swelling has settled.

Then style. Starter jewellery is a single, simple choice. A healed piercing opens up everything else: huggies, hoops, threaders, gemstones, a front that finally speaks to the rest of your stack. This is where curation really begins.

What happens in the studio

A jewellery change with us is quick, considered and completely sterile. Here's how it goes:

  1. A health check. Your piercer looks at each piercing to confirm it's ready for a change, and talks you through anything that needs more time.
  2. A styling conversation. We look at your ear as a whole: your anatomy, the pieces you already love and how you want your stack to feel.
  3. The fit. Every piece is measured to your piercing, so posts sit flush and hoops hug the way they should.
  4. The change. Your new jewellery goes in from sterile, sealed packaging. Your piercer does the work, so you never have to fight a threaded post at the bathroom mirror.

Only want to change one side? That's the beauty of buying singles. Already own Covetear pieces from a past stack? Bring them along. We can talk through how they fit into the new curation.

First upgrades worth investing i

Your first swap sets the tone for everything that follows. Every Covetear earring is sold individually, so you can upgrade one piercing at a time or mix pieces across both ears. These are the singles we reach for most often.

The hoop that hugs. For lobes and helixes that have fully healed, a close fitting hoop is the easiest way to change the whole shape of your ear. Plain polished gold for every day, a touch of stone when you want more light.

A front with a point of view. Swap your plain starter top for something that holds its own. A diamond for quiet sparkle, a pearl for softness, or a black stone for an edge.

A threader for movement. A single threader adds length and drape, perfect for a classic lobe that's ready to be more than a dot.

A charm to make it yours. Once a hoop is in, hoop charms let you change the mood without changing the piercing.

Our jewellery is crafted from Fairtrade and recycled gold, with lab grown, conflict free stones. It's made to stay in, not to be swapped out again next season. For cartilage, browse by placement starting with our helix edit.
