NOSE PIERCING GUIDE

Thinking about getting a nose piercing? Here's everything you need to know.

what is a nose piercing?

A nose piercing is a versatile and elegant addition to any look. While there are several placements to choose from, the most popular — and most flattering — is the nostril piercing, positioned on the soft cartilage that frames the outer edge of the nose.

Nose piercings are typically low in pain but require careful aftercare, as the area is exposed to bacteria and affected by factors such as colds, allergies, and daily skincare routines. With patience and proper care, they heal beautifully and become a defining feature of your personal style.

In this guide, we’ll explore the different types of nose piercings, pricing, the procedure, healing, and how to style this classic placement.

nostril

A nostril piercing passes through the soft cartilage on either side of the nose and is most often fitted with a stud. Placement depends on your unique anatomy and facial structure — our expert piercers will ensure balance and symmetry to achieve your desired aesthetic.

septum

A septum piercing sits through the thin wall of tissue that separates the nostrils — the small, flexible area just below the cartilage. Contrary to popular belief, the needle doesn’t go through the cartilage itself, but through the soft spot known as the “sweet spot.”

This placement can be styled with a ring or clicker and offers a bold yet refined look that complements both minimal and statement styles.

nose piercing procedure

Your piercer will begin by sterilising the area with a medical-grade solution before marking the placement — ensuring symmetry and alignment with your facial features.

The piercing is then performed using a sterile, single-use 18-gauge needle. We never use piercing guns, as they can cause unnecessary trauma and increase infection risk. The needle method allows for cleaner healing, greater precision, and minimal discomfort.

Once complete, your chosen jewellery will be installed securely. All Covetear piercing jewellery is engineered for both safety and elegance, so you can wear it comfortably throughout healing and long after.

And just like that, your new piercing is ready to be admired.

Pain and healing time

Pain Guide: 8/10

While the procedure itself is quick and well tolerated, the nose’s sensitivity can cause mild discomfort during the days following the piercing. The most important part of the process is aftercare, as the nose is exposed to moisture, bacteria, and frequent contact.

Healing time: approximately 3–6 months

Here’s what to expect during healing:

First 72 hours: Swelling, redness, light bleeding, and a warm sensation are normal.

Weeks 2–4: You may notice mild pulsing or clear fluid that forms a crust. Avoid touching or rotating your jewellery.

Weeks 5–12: The piercing may feel comfortable, but healing continues internally. Avoid friction and pressure. Around this time, you may discuss downsizing your post to encourage full healing.

3 months and beyond: Patience is key. Changing jewellery too early can lead to irritation or infection. We recommend waiting at least 9 months before changing your initial jewellery.

If your jewellery is removed without replacement, the piercing may close within hours — always keep jewellery securely in place.

Aftercare

Nose piercings require gentle, consistent care due to their proximity to the nasal passages. With proper aftercare, your piercing will heal beautifully and remain irritation-free.

At Covetear, we offer unlimited complimentary Aftercare Appointments to provide guidance and ensure optimal healing at every stage.

Follow these four key steps:

  1. Avoid touching your piercing. Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the area.
  2. Clean with NeilMed™ Piercing Aftercare Spray. Hold 3–6cm away and spray both front and back. Use a clean cotton tip to gently remove any dried residue.
  3. Pat the area dry. Avoid tissues, cotton buds, or anything that can shed fibres and irritate the skin.
  4. Clean twice daily for 6–8 weeks, then once daily thereafter.

Pro tip: Take extra care during colds or allergies — blowing your nose too forcefully or exposing the area to excess moisture can slow healing.

is your piercing infected?

Here's what to do - The serious stuff

Because of the nose’s exposure to bacteria, it’s especially important to stay consistent with aftercare. Avoid unnecessary contact, and never twist or push the jewellery.

If you experience sudden swelling, coloured discharge (yellow, green, or dark), red streaking, fever, or dizziness, contact us immediately.

Our team is available seven days a week for aftercare advice, though if infection is suspected, we recommend seeing a doctor promptly.
