TRAGUS PIERCING GUIDE

Been wanting to get your tragus pierced? Here's everything you need to know before you do!

what is a tragus piercing?

The tragus piercing is one of the most elegant ways to introduce sparkle to your ear without overwhelming your look. Subtle yet striking, it’s a Covetear favourite for its versatility and balance.

The tragus is the small, thick section of cartilage that partially covers the ear canal. While its shape varies from person to person, it’s generally triangular and sits just in front of the inner ear. A tragus piercing passes directly through this area and is typically adorned with a stud during healing. After approximately six months, this can be switched to a fine ring if desired.

In this guide, we’ll explore the types of tragus piercings, pricing, procedure, aftercare, and how to style this refined placement beautifully.

Singular Tragus

The singular tragus is the most common version of this piercing and suits almost every ear shape. Because the size of the tragus varies between individuals, most clients opt for a single piercing that enhances their natural anatomy while maintaining a minimalist look.

It’s a refined choice for those seeking a hint of rebellion — subtle enough for everyday wear, yet eye-catching enough to make a statement.

double tragus

For those with a little extra ear real estate, a double tragus offers a distinctive, balanced look. Two piercings placed closely together along the tragus create symmetry and texture, though this placement depends entirely on your anatomy.

During your appointment, our piercers will assess whether this configuration is suitable for you to ensure both comfort and longevity.

tragus piercing procedure

Your piercer will begin by sterilising the ear using a medical-grade alcohol solution. The site will then be marked carefully, taking into account your anatomy, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.

If multiple piercings are being performed, placement and symmetry will be precisely measured.

At Covetear, we pierce exclusively with a sterile, single-use 18-gauge needle. We do not use piercing guns or pressure devices, as these can cause trauma to cartilage and increase the risk of infection. The needle method allows for greater accuracy, minimal discomfort, and a cleaner heal.

Once complete, your chosen piece will be fitted securely. Our piercing jewellery is designed with both healing and long-term wear in mind — crafted for safety, style, and effortless comfort.

Just like that, your new piercing is ready to shine.

Pain and healing time

Pain Guide: 8/10

The tragus piercing is slightly more intense than a lobe or helix piercing, as it passes through thicker cartilage. However, the sensation is brief and well tolerated by most clients — quickly replaced by excitement for your new piece.

Healing time: approximately 6–12 months

Here’s what to expect throughout the process:

First 72 hours: Redness, mild swelling, warmth, and minor bleeding are normal.

Weeks 2–4: You may notice light pulsing or a small amount of fluid that dries into a crust. Avoid touching or twisting the jewellery.

Weeks 5–12: Even if the piercing feels comfortable, internal healing is still ongoing. Continue cleaning regularly and avoid friction. At this stage, your piercer may recommend downsizing your post for improved healing.

3 months and beyond: Patience is essential — cartilage piercings can appear healed long before they truly are. Changing your jewellery too soon can cause irritation or scarring. We recommend waiting a minimum of 9 months before replacing your initial jewellery.

If your jewellery is removed without replacement, the piercing may begin to close within hours. Always keep jewellery in place to maintain your piercing.

Aftercare

The tragus is a small but delicate area, and consistent aftercare is vital to achieving a smooth, irritation-free heal.

At Covetear, we provide unlimited complimentary Aftercare Appointments to help you throughout your healing process with professional advice and support.

Follow these essential steps for optimal healing:

  1. Hands off. Avoid touching the piercing unnecessarily. Always wash your hands thoroughly if handling is required.
  2. Clean with NeilMed™ Piercing Aftercare Spray. Hold 3–6cm away, spraying both front and back. Use a clean cotton tip to remove any residue or dried discharge.
  3. Pat completely dry. Avoid tissues, Q-Tips, or cotton wool — fibres can irritate the area and cause infection.
  4. Clean twice daily for at least 6–8 weeks, then once daily thereafter.

Pro tip: When washing your hair, gently rinse around your piercing to remove shampoo or conditioner before applying your aftercare spray. Product build-up can cause irritation or delay healing

is your piercing infected?

Here's what to do - The serious stuff

Your aftercare routine plays the most important role in successful healing. Interfering with your piercing — touching, twisting, or neglecting cleaning — can increase your risk of complications.

If you experience sudden swelling, excessive bleeding, coloured discharge (yellow, green, or dark), red streaking, or fever-like symptoms, contact us immediately for aftercare advice.

Our piercers are available seven days a week, though if infection is suspected, we recommend seeking medical care as soon as possible.
